Introduction

A countryside escape like no other for yourself and your four-legged friend to enjoy – this grand stately pile, set within staggeringly beautiful surrounds will be sure to wow. Bovey Castle offers five red-star luxury, and a Fido’s Family Friendly Award in the 2020 PetsPyjamas Travel awards – PetsPyjamas is part of the UK’s leading dog-friendly travel – revealing and awarding the UK’s most dog-friendly hotels for their hos-paw-tality!

Set within 275 acres of breathtaking countryside on the western side of Dartmoor’s National Park, soak up moorland views – your hound at your heels – on a sporting estate that caters for every whim, from an 18-hole championship golf course, off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting and horseback adventures to the luxury Elan Spa with its hydrotherapy pool and fine dining in the pop-up tasting room. Shaded by lush woodland, the resort becomes your own private sanctuary, allowing you to experience a truly unique stay in the heart of rural Devon. Four-legged friends are welcomed in all of the bedrooms and lodges, with a bed, bowl, toy and chew, with crates and outdoor kennels available if required.

Where to walk

Nestled in the rolling valleys of Dartmoor National Park, Bovey Castle offers a dramatic wilderness location for a relaxing dog-friendly getaway. Set within 275 acres of beautiful rural parkland – with heather-covered moorland and wild ponies right on the doorstep – enjoy excellent walking routes, outdoor activities and country pursuits. A booklet is provided on suitable walks around the estate, allowing you and your furry sidekick to discover the many trails and woodland walks a stick’s throw away.

A favourite of ours is the beautiful wooded river walk to the 13th century thatched village of North Bovey, one of the Moor’s most charming spots. On returning to the hotel, why not treat your friend to a scrub down at the ‘Pooch Parlour’ including a shower, shampoo, hair dryer, towels and hair combs to ensure your dog is properly pampered after a muddy walk.

Dine with your dog

There is the option to dine with your dog in the Cathedral room, as well as the terrace during warmer months. And of course there’s always room service, with guests staying in the lodges able to order from a daily takeaway menu, delivered straight to their door.

For those wishing to dine out, we love The Ring of Bells at North Bovey, a charming dog-friendly 13th century thatched inn, set in the heart of the village, serving high quality dishes using locally sourced ingredients, along with a great selection of West Country ales and ciders. Dogs are able to join you in the bar area or cosy snug, where a treat and water bowl will be waiting.

The chic foodie town of Chagford is also worth a visit, just a fifteen-minute drive away.

What Partridge says

Wow, Bovey Castle is every dogs dream stay; from my welcome letter and delicious treats left in our enormous room, to the pawsome countryside surrounding us. This is hos-paw-tality at its finest! I couldn’t get enough of the moorland walks right on the doorstep, with my tail in overdrive the entire trip. Paws crossed we can stay again soon!
