Introduction

Dog Friendly B&B in Devon

A classic Georgian country house with a difference – Whitehouse Hotel offers a refreshing take on the traditional dog-friendly country pile, a home-from-home bursting with character and a unique design. Sink into modern comfort, with a nod towards its heritage, the balance strikes just right. Think classic features fused with modern and quirky interiors, surrounded by mature gardens, and in easy reach of some traditional dog-friendly Devon pubs.

Suited to those looking for a luxurious escape with their hounds in tow, where attention to detail is second-to-none. Guests can indulge in a hearty breakfast created with championed local produce, a well-stocked bar and large outdoor area, complete with a fire pit. All just twenty minutes from white sandy beaches in the heart of the South Hams. Four-legged friends are welcome in one of three dog friendly rooms, where they will find doggie treats and water bowls.

Dogs are also welcome in the common areas including the dining room, so long as they remain on a leash. There is also a dog waste bin and an area to hose your mutt down on site, with hosts Katie and Chris offering a breakfast sausage for well behaved mutts. Your pup is sure to be well looked after!

Where to walk

There are plenty of walks direct from the garden into a network of bridleways, as well as a host of year-round dog friendly beaches in the area. Including Mill Bay at the mouth of Salcombe estuary and Beesands, just south of Slapton Sands. A mile-long shingle beach backed by fields, leading to Hallsands, a horseshoe bay, ideally positioned to take a break or play with your four-legged friend in the waves. Guidebooks, walking routes and OS maps can be found in bedrooms.

Dine with your dog

Head to The Bear & Blacksmith, located just a six-minute walk into the village, for a gastronomic treat of local and seasonal produce; expect freshest fish and seafood from the surrounding shores as well as a selection of Devon’s finest meat sourced from the pub’s very own farm – three-miles away – and lovingly grown vegetables from the kitchen garden, situated next to the pub, guaranteeing zero miles from field-to-fork.

We also love the Cricket Inn at Beesands, dog friendly in the bar area, with plenty of outdoor seating. Serving flavoursome dishes that showcase the very best of locally caught fish and shellfish with a selection of daily specials built around their indoor BBQ. There is also The Beach House, overlooking South Milton Sands, a laidback beachside café serving simple seafood dishes for takeaway. Or eating in and The Winking Prawn, on the edge of North Sands, just outside Salcombe, offering coffee and cakes or a full seafood platter with fizz.

Doggie room rate

There is a charge of £15 a night, capped at two nights if guests are staying for three nights or longer.

What Partridge says

Whitehouse Hotel is the perfect hideaway for hounds. With a large garden and dog friendly dining room, as well as two lounges, I left feeling super-pampered. The breakfast sausage was certainly a highlight, along with the many walking routes to choose from. With lots of dog friendly beaches all-year-round, what’s not to wag about?
