Pengelly Retreat – Hayle

Introduction

Pengelly Retreat

Set amongst nature, The Sail House Yurt offers a peaceful spot to stay with your dog in tow. If you’re after a low impact getaway that is in keeping with the natural beauty of the landscape, this little luxury yurt is a brilliant idea.

Pengelly Retreat is tucked away in the countryside between the north and south coasts of Cornwall. There are five beautiful acres of land comprising intriguing hidden gardens, ponds and pools, a wild swimming lake, fed by the stream bordering the land, forest and meadows – it’s the perfect place to take time out with your canine pal, unplug from devices and completely relax and restore. You find the yurt kitted out with everything you need as well as a few little luxuries including underfloor heating, a stand-alone bath and a log- burner. There’s also wonderful secluded outdoor shower with hot water and lots of great seating dotted around overlooking the lake. It’s a place to hunker down, cosy-up by the fire and listen to the sounds of nature.

The accommodation sits lightly within its natural environment, which supports and nurtures the rich wildlife and native Cornish fauna and flora – the Sail House invites you to experience luxury, comfort, privacy and space, sleeping two adults, with a single futon which can be provided for one child. Your dog will love making itself at home amidst all the sniffs and sounds of the surrounding wildlife. Make the most of your own private deck and pontoon at the side of a gorgeous wild swimming lake – fed by the stream that runs along the border of the land, the water is part of a flowing set of lakes and ponds that then returns back into the stream – perfect for cold-water swimming throughout the year.

The Sail House has its own paddleboard to explore the lake from and the decking also makes a great place to practice yoga. There’s also an 18-foot streamside tipi with wooden deck floor which can be booked to enjoy a relaxing treatment or be set up for a dinner venue with a private chef – a beautiful spot with the sound of birdsong and flowing water all around.

Where to walk

Let you dog lead you through five-acres of private land and gardens at Pengelly Retreat, including a secret garden tucked away at the top of the land. Pengelly is a super peaceful spot to stay – hidden away in the countryside between the north and south coast of west Cornwall – it feels like you’re completely remote, away from the hustle and bustle, yet the central location means you’re perfectly positioned to explore the area, just couple of minutes’ drive from the main road that links Hayle, Helston and Penzance and 15 minutes’ from award-winning surf beaches on both coasts where you pick up the South West Coastal Path.

There’s Gwithian and Godrevy on the north coast and the expansive Praa Sands on the south, where you dog has the freedom to run about and play – there’s just short seasonal ban between July 1 st and August 31 st between 10am and 6pm. We also love the pretty coastal harbour of Porthleven, 10-minutes’ drive away, where dogs are welcome on the eastern side of the beach all-year-round. Slightly further afield are the seaside towns of St Ives and Marazion, easily reached within about 25-minutes. It’s also a great spot to explore some of Cornwall’s most beautiful gardens including Tremenheere, Trewidden and St Michael’s Mount.

Dine with your dog

It’s fun to eat in or outside the yurt, soaking up the experience of being in nature – you can order in a delicious box of local produce for your stay from the Cornish Food Box Company who offer fresh produce, baked goods, store cupboard essentials, drinks and lots more. There’s also a brilliant farm shop at Trevaskis Farm selling lots of local produce to stock up with – just ten minutes away.

For more special occasions, there’s the opportunity to book a private chef to cook up an amazing meal, served to you in the unique surroundings of the Streamside Tipi. Owners of Pengelly Retreat, Ruth and Jim can recommend some local chefs for the experience, who will discuss and put together a menu. It’s a special environment to enjoy a celebration meal, surrounded by the sights and sound of the stream close by, with a cosy log burner inside and firepit outside.

If you’d prefer to eat out, then we can recommend Porthleven – an absoltue foodie’s haven – we love Kota Kai, where dogs are welcome to join you on the outdoor tables. If you’re after a great dog friendly pub, we recommend The Ship Inn with its classic dishes and roaring open fire. For local ice-cream head to Nauti-but-Ice and for speciality Cornish coffee you can’t beat Origin, located on the harbourside.

What Partridge says

Pengelly Retreat is a joy for us dogs – surrounded by all the sniffs and sights of nature, I couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable stay. The yurt is spacious and cosy with a huge comfy bed to curl up on next to the log burner and there are acres of paths to explore on site. It’s also a stick’s throw from the coast and lots of great walking spots. I’ll keep my paws crossed we come back!
