Introduction

Beach Lofts at Watergate Bay

The Beach Lofts at Watergate Bay offer super luxe, light-filled spaces to kick back and make the most of the stunning sea views at one of Cornwall’s most-loved surfing beaches, with your four-legged friend in tow. It’s a brilliant location to take time out with a focus on ‘active relaxation’ – the two-mile expanse of sand is renowned for its exceptional surf, great for anyone looking for a lesson or perhaps a beach yoga class to a backdrop of blues.

There are seven dog-friendly Beach Loft rooms with views across the bay, with lots of space to sprawl out and relax – your dog will find a water bowl and a cosy Joules dog bed to curl up in, and for humans there are picnic hampers and blankets, perfect for taking your breakfast to the beach. The lodges have been beautifully designed with a focus on colour and texture, drawing inspiration from the coastal surrounds. Think lots of rattan, rich earthy hues and natural materials, with stylish whitewashed bathrooms home to free-standing baths (room 101 has a round bathtub, set at the window to make the most of beach vistas) sliding floor- to-ceiling windows directly above the beach, plus a well-stocked pantry full of local treats and a waffle machine for a leisurely breakfast in your loft, as well as freshly baked cakes every afternoon – the perfect treat after a blustery walk!

Guests staying at The Beach Lofts receive complimentary surf lessons and treatments at the Swim Club, with the opportunity to dine at four onsite eateries.

Where to walk

The north Cornish coast is home to a host of wonderful sandy beaches and coves ready for exploring, as well as exhilarating cliff walks, making it a dog-walkers delight.

Watergate Bay is literally a stick’s throw – head down one flight of stairs and you’re on the gorgeous two-and-a-half mile expanse of tidal sands. It’s a brilliant space for your dog to run about and play, where at low tide you can walk to the furthest rock formations, backed by beautiful clifftops, discovering hidden caves and rockpools along the way. Canines are welcome at Watergate Beach all-year-round, making it a favourite spot whichever season you visit.

We particularly love the clifftop walk from Watergate Beach to Mawgan Porth which is two-and-a-half-miles along the coast path, taking in staggering views across hidden bays, rocky outcrops and wild flowers as well as the occasional Chuff – Cornwall’s national bird. Walk further around the headland and you will come to Bedruthen Steps, with its impressive sculptural rock formations on the beach. Watergate to Bedruthen is just under four-miles of undulating coastal path, so it’s a good idea to set off in the morning and stop for lunch before heading back.

Book a table at Bedruthen or The Scarlet and tuck into tasty plates with elevated sea views. Other dog-friendly beaches on the North Cornwall coastline include Mawgan Porth, Porthkidney Beach, Mother Ivey’s Bay and Prussia Cove beach.

Dine with your dog

There are plenty of options for eating out – Dogs are welcome to join you in The Beach Hut, serving great brunches and seafood dishes with a fusion of fresh and sustainable ingredients, influences and styles – and The Living Space, known for its relaxed dining, to a backdrop of sea views. Both restaurants are found onsite and serve food all day.

If your pal is happy to be left for a couple of hours alone-time, head to Emily Scott’s award-winning beachside restaurant, with a focus on fresh fish dishes and ingredients driven by the seasons or there’s Zacrys, found in the hotel, serving modern-fusion cuisine, with an Asian influence.

Doggie room rate

Your dog will be charged at £15 per night or two dogs at £20 a night.

What Partridge says

The Beach Lofts at Watergate Bay are hard to beat, positioned just above my favourite stretch of beach. It was so much fun to run down the steps each morning and feel my paws on the sand; breathe in that Cornish sea air and run free across the two-miles of beach – the pawfect playground for canines!

I look forward to returning to Watergate every year but the Beach Lofts offer an elevated stay with lots more space in such close proximity to the beach – more relaxed, designed with us four-legs in mind, as well as our humans.
