Star & Garter – Falmouth

Introduction

Star & Garter

A gastro pub and restaurant with a maritime vibe in a prime position at the top of Falmouth’s High Street, The Star & Garter is our go-to dog friendly spot in Falmouth for when we want to indulge in some hearty food to a backdrop of dreamy estuary views. It’s inviting and relaxed, a cosy base to enjoy laidback dining with your four-legged friend at your heels.

With its low lighting and great range of beverages, it makes a superb spot for a chilled evening after exploring the town with its quirky arts scene, host of cafes, antiques and galleries.

Dine with your dog

Dogs are welcomed with open arms in the bar area of the restaurant, where they will be fussed over and offered plenty of treats.

On the menu

Food is wholesome and tasty with menus that are filled with seasonal dishes cooked over the fire with lots of creative flair. Chef and owner Elliot Thompson works with the ethos of using the entire animal, ensuring that nothing goes to waste, as well as working closely with artisan suppliers in the county using the freshest ingredients possible; all of the meat is butchered, cured and smoked by the kitchen team and the fish is caught direct from the local day boats.

For a true taste of Cornwall, there’s plenty of feast-style sharing plates to tuck into, but the Sunday roasts are what brings us back time and again – served on a sharing board for two with all the trimmings – think crispiest salted-potatoes, mouth-wateringly good garlicy greens and tangiest cauliflower cheese – choose from moorland beef topside, pork belly or slow-cooked lamb, with a huge yellow Yorkshire made with delicious St Ewe eggs.

For a midweek supper, opt for grilled pollock with mussel and saffron broth, smoked butter mash, shaved fennel and aioli, slow cooked dug leg in a bordelaise sauce with smoked greens or chicken schnitzel with pancetta, wild garlic butter and aged parmesan. Sides play with some interesting flavour combos including bone marrow mash, greens with marmite butter and hand-cut fries with crackling salt. Follow up with something sweet; we recommend trying the locally-made Origin Coffee ice cream or the insanely yummy sticky toffee banana pudding Wash everything down with craft beer or a refreshing local gin.

There’s also a great list of seasonal cocktails.

Where to walk

A 25-minute walk will take you across to the opposite side of town where you will find one of Falmouth’s most-celebrated beaches – Gyllyngvase, popular for its blue flag status and water sports offering. Here you will also find the Gylly Beach Café with its dog-friendly veranda.

It’s worth noting that there’s a seasonal ban 15th May – 30th September, between 10am and 6pm. We particularly love the coastal jaunt from Falmouth to Maenporth, starting with a half-hour walk to Swanpool Beach before joining the South West Coast Path, taking you about an hour south all the way to Maenporth – a stunning horseshoe-shaped sandy bay, backed by cliffs and home to Michael Caines, beachside restaurant, The Cove.

The Helford is also a gorgeous area that your dog will love to explore, protected from the elements, and home to the dog-friendly Ferry Boat Inn.

For adventures further afield, pick up the ferry to the quaint fishing village of St Mawes, with its three beaches, candy-coloured cottages and hillside Castle. There are also countless walks on the Roseland to explore with your canine pal in tow.

What Partridge says

The Star & Garter is one my favourite pubs in south Cornwall – and there are many! I love it for the great meaty sniffs, treats at the bar and dog-loving staff. Luckily for me, it’s a regular haunt for my humans so I am sure it won’t be long before we return to this pawsome dog-friendly venue!
