The Stage is a brilliant independent chef-owned restaurant, designed with foodies in mind; set on trendy Magdalen Road, a ten-minute walk from the centre of Exeter, it’s founded and run by six chefs – previously known as the Taco Boys in Cornwall.
With a farm-to-table ethos, these guys have a refined set up with surprise tasting menus that are driven by the seasons. Choose from four-courses for £25 for a weekday lunch (£42 on Saturdays) or six-courses for £48, served in the evenings, with the addition of a drinks flight (£42) if you’re keen to try a different pairing with each course. Overall it’s brilliant value for the incredible attention-to-detail and unique experience.
The dog-loving team will ensure your hound is just as well looked after as you are with a water bowl, treats and lots of fuss throughout your sitting. The vibe is relaxed with a vibrant and lively atmosphere and there’s a real sense of fun to the service, as well as of the wonderful element of surprise to each dish. The chef-led team are unapologetically themselves and cook and serve with a rare authenticity and passion for what they do.
Expect upbeat music – the ‘Get Groovy’ playlist combines classic tunes with upbeat dance tracks – low lighting, bare wooden floors and tables, large mirrors and a selection of photos and art that refer back to the team’s origin in Cornwall as the Taco Boys. Expect lots of knowledge about what you’re eating and the origins of ingredients, as well as which drinks pair well with each course. The guys are extremely hands-on with the garden, smokehouse, brewery and foraging seasons and will guarantee you an entirely authentic foodie-experience you won’t forget.
Dogs are welcome to join you.
The menu is a constant evolution, working with what’s in season, as well as what’s found in the hedgerows without any wastage whatsoever – expect the entire animal to be used in some shape or form within the courses served.
Each course is a delightful surprise; starting with the delicate sea bass ceviche, followed by a perfectly prepped pan-seared scallop with homegrown potato croquette, 14-month cured Parma ham, mousseline and scallop foam made from corals. Followed up with a roast parsnip mousse, smoked maple syrup and homegrown dill pickles, served alongside insanely good torn bread and homegrown black garlic butter and chilli sriracha (the process of the latter taking three-months to achieve).
Next we tucked into peaso marinated pork belly (made from the peas harvested back in august), kitchen garden kimchi, kales and a chilli dressing from the spangles in the poly tunnel. The pallet cleanser was a joyfully tangy sea buckthorn sorbet, physalis from the greenhouse and fennel herb, foraged the same
morning, followed by the sweetest treat of salted-chocolate and Koji tart.
From Magdalen Road, an easy ten-minute walk will take you down onto Exeter’s historic quayside with its many cafes, bars and craft offerings. It’s a superb spot to head for a stretch with your canine pal. Once on the quay, there are ample routes to choose from, head a mile and-a-half to Double Locks – a great dog-friendly waterside pub, or if you’re after a longer jaunt, walk five-and-a-half miles to the super dog friendly Turf Hotel – an impressive waterside pub with lots of outdoor seating across an expansive lawn with dreamy estuary views; it’s only reachable by boat, bike or foot along the tow path – a more remote spot
that’s worth trekking the distance for.
There’s an extensive selection of local ales, beers, gins and wine at both spots, along with some great pub classics. The Turf is also renowned
for its brilliant seafood offering, with an open bbq on the decking in high summer.
This is such a great little spot to hang with my humans – its super cosy with some of the best foodie sniffs and lots of fuss from the friendliest staff. There are also some great walking spots nearby. All four paws are crossed we visit again soon!
